It's one of the most common decisions online shoppers face: choose a percentage-off discount or a dollar-off discount. Most people go with whatever's available, but our data shows the difference between the two can mean saving twice as much on the same order. We analyzed 1.4 million coupon codes across 138,000 retailers over 16 months to determine which discount type delivers more savings — and when each one actually comes out ahead. The answer depends on your cart total.
For most online orders, dollar-off codes save more. Across 1.4 million coupon records, the median dollar-off discount is $30 compared to 15% for percentage-off codes. On a $100 order, that's $30 in savings versus $15 — a 2x difference.
The breakeven point between the two is a $200 cart. Below that, dollar-off comes out ahead. Above it, percentage-off starts to deliver more value. Since the majority of online purchases fall under $200, dollar-off is the better deal in most real-world scenarios.
However, there's a catch: percentage-off codes make up 87.3% of all available coupon codes, while dollar-off accounts for just 12.7%. Shoppers are roughly seven times more likely to encounter a percentage-off code for any given retailer. The better discount type is also the harder one to find.
When is percentage off better than dollar off?
The point where percentage-off and dollar-off codes deliver equal savings is simple to calculate: divide the dollar-off amount by the percentage-off rate. Using the median values from our data — $30 off and 15% off — the breakeven cart total is $200.
Here's how that plays out across common order sizes:
| Cart Total | 15% Off Savings | $30 Off Savings | Better Option |
|---|---|---|---|
| $50 | $7.50 | $30.00 | Dollar off (+$22.50) |
| $75 | $11.25 | $30.00 | Dollar off (+$18.75) |
| $100 | $15.00 | $30.00 | Dollar off (+$15.00) |
| $150 | $22.50 | $30.00 | Dollar off (+$7.50) |
| $200 | $30.00 | $30.00 | Breakeven |
| $300 | $45.00 | $30.00 | Percentage off (+$15.00) |
| $500 | $75.00 | $30.00 | Percentage off (+$45.00) |
The advantage shifts significantly at both ends. On a $50 order, a $30 dollar-off code saves four times as much as 15% off. On a $500 order, 15% off saves $45 more than the flat $30 discount.
For everyday purchases — groceries, clothing, beauty products — most carts land in the $50 to $150 range, where dollar-off has a clear edge. Percentage-off codes start to pay off on bigger purchases like electronics, furniture, or multi-item orders.
How common are percentage off vs dollar off coupons?
Percentage-off codes dominate the coupon market. Of the 1.4 million coupon records in our dataset, 87.3% are percentage-off and just 12.7% are dollar-off. For every dollar-off code available online, there are roughly seven percentage-off codes.
That ratio has remained remarkably stable. Tracking the split month over month from January 2025 through April 2026, percentage-off codes consistently held between 86% and 89% of all offers. Dollar-off codes never climbed above 14% in any single month. This isn't a seasonal fluctuation — it's the standard structure of how retailers discount.
The typical percentage-off code offers between 10% and 20%. More than 75% of all percentage-off codes fall within that range, with the median at 15%. Discounts above 30% are uncommon, making up less than 11% of all offers.
Dollar-off codes are more spread out. The median is $30, but the distribution is much wider — ranging from $5 codes at the lower end to $200 or more at the 90th percentile. About 28% of dollar-off codes offer $10 or less, while another 27% offer $50 or more. Shoppers are less likely to find a dollar-off code, but when they do, there's a wider range of potential savings.
Which shopping categories have the best dollar off and percentage off deals?
The gap between dollar-off and percentage-off discounts varies significantly by what you're shopping for. In some categories, dollar-off codes offer four or five times the face value of the available percentage-off alternative. In others, the two are nearly even.
Here are the most notable splits across major shopping categories:
| Category | Median % Off | Median $ Off | Breakeven Cart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automotive | 10% | $30 | $300 |
| Education | 20% | $30 | $150 |
| Electronics | 15% | $30 | $200 |
| Health | 18% | $20 | $111 |
| Home & Garden | 15% | $20 | $133 |
| Sports & Outdoors | 15% | $20 | $133 |
| Travel | 15% | $20 | $133 |
| Beauty | 15% | $5 | $33 |
| Apparel | 15% | $5 | $33 |
| Food & Restaurants | 15% | $10 | $67 |
A few categories stand out. Automotive has the widest gap — the median dollar-off code is $30 against just 10% off, meaning dollar-off wins on any order under $300. Education follows a similar pattern with a $150 breakeven. These are categories where dollar-off codes deliver outsized value compared to the percentage-off alternative.
On the other end, Beauty and Apparel have unusually low median dollar-off values at just $5. In those categories, a 15% off code beats dollar-off on anything over a $33 cart — meaning percentage-off is almost always the better pick for clothing and cosmetics shoppers.
Food & Restaurants lands in the middle. The median dollar-off code is $10 against 15% off, putting the breakeven at $67. For a typical takeout or delivery order, the two types are close to even.
Do dollar off coupons include better perks?
Beyond the face value of the discount itself, dollar-off codes are more likely to come bundled with additional perks. Here's how the two types compare:
| Perk | Percentage Off | Dollar Off |
|---|---|---|
| Includes free shipping | 5% of merchants | 16% of merchants |
| Includes free gift | 2% of merchants | 8% of merchants |
| Avg codes per merchant | 9.0 | 11.4 |
Dollar-off codes lead in every category. They're 3.2 times more likely to include free shipping and four times more likely to include a free gift.
That means the total value of a dollar-off code often extends past the listed discount. A $30-off code with free shipping on a $100 order could represent $38 to $42 in total savings depending on the retailer, widening the gap over a 15% off code with no extras. And with more codes per merchant on average, shoppers who find a dollar-off retailer have a better chance of stacking a discount with a shipping or gift perk.
What is the average coupon code discount?
Setting expectations matters. The discounts shoppers encounter most often look very different from the headline deals that get promoted on social media or in marketing emails.
For percentage-off codes, the vast majority cluster in a tight range. Here's what the landscape actually looks like:
| Discount Range | Share of All % Off Codes |
|---|---|
| 1–10% off | 36.0% |
| 11–15% off | 20.7% |
| 16–20% off | 19.0% |
| 21–30% off | 13.4% |
| 31–50% off | 8.2% |
| 51% off or more | 2.8% |
More than three out of four percentage-off codes offer 20% or less. Anything above 30% is uncommon, and 50% or more is exceptionally rare — fewer than 3 in 100 codes reach that level.
Dollar-off codes are spread across a much wider range:
| Discount Range | Share of All $ Off Codes |
|---|---|
| $1–$10 off | 28.0% |
| $11–$25 off | 19.0% |
| $26–$50 off | 20.0% |
| $51–$100 off | 15.8% |
| $101–$250 off | 10.6% |
| $251 or more | 6.7% |
There's no single cluster the way there is with percentage-off codes. About a quarter of dollar-off codes offer $10 or less, another quarter offer $26 to $50, and a meaningful 17% offer over $100. The spread is much wider, which means dollar-off codes are less predictable — but the upside when you land a good one is considerably higher.
For the typical shopper, the most realistic expectation is a 10% to 20% off code. That's what the vast majority of available coupons deliver. Dollar-off codes are worth seeking out when they're available, but percentage-off in that 10–20% range is what most checkout experiences will look like.
How to choose between percentage off and dollar off coupons
If both discount types are available for the same retailer, the decision comes down to a few simple rules.
- Check your cart total against the breakeven point. Divide the dollar-off amount by the percentage-off rate. If a retailer offers $30 off and 15% off, the breakeven is $200. Below that, use the dollar-off code. Above it, use the percentage-off code. This works for any combination of values.
- Know your category. In Apparel and Beauty, percentage-off codes are almost always the better pick — dollar-off codes in those categories have a median value of just $5. In Electronics, Automotive, and Education, dollar-off codes tend to carry significantly more value and are worth prioritizing.
- Factor in the extras. Dollar-off codes are three times more likely to include free shipping. If two codes deliver similar savings, the one bundled with a shipping or free gift perk adds more total value to your order.
- If only one type is available, use it. This may sound obvious, but it's the most common scenario. Percentage-off codes outnumber dollar-off codes seven to one. In most cases the choice is made for you, and a 15% discount is better than holding out for a dollar-off code that may not exist for that retailer.
The bottom line
Dollar-off coupon codes deliver more savings on most everyday online orders. With a median discount of $30 compared to 15% for percentage-off codes, dollar-off comes out ahead on any cart under $200 — which covers the majority of online purchases. They're also more likely to include free shipping and free gift perks, adding value beyond the listed discount.
The tradeoff is availability. Percentage-off codes make up 87% of all coupon offers, and that ratio has held steady for over a year. Most shoppers will encounter percentage-off codes far more often, and a 15% discount you can actually find beats a $30 discount that doesn't exist for your retailer.
When both options are available, do the quick math. Divide the dollar amount by the percentage rate, compare it to your cart total, and pick accordingly. It takes five seconds and can double your savings on the same order.
Methodology
This analysis is based on 1,426,850 merchant-month coupon records from the SimplyCodes platform, spanning January 2025 through April 2026 across 138,000+ unique retailers. Each record captures the highest available discount, discount type (percentage-off or dollar-off), code inventory, and promotional perks (free shipping, free gift) for a given merchant in a given month. Category breakdowns use SimplyCodes' merchant taxonomy across 17 top-level categories. Discount outliers were filtered — percentage-off values capped at 100% and dollar-off values capped at $1,000 — to prevent data quality artifacts from skewing results. Median values are used as the primary comparison metric throughout to reduce the impact of outliers. The most recent partial month was excluded from all calculations to ensure complete-month comparisons.
