That belief lines up with a related pattern elsewhere in the data: men are also the group most likely to have paid full price for something, then discovered a working promo code existed all along, a pattern the study calls the Reverse Checkout Gap. 61% of men report this, compared with 50% of women.
That's not the only place gender shows up in how U.S. shoppers use and experience promo codes, but it's the sharpest one. The SimplyCodes Coupon Statistics 2026: The State of Shopper Trust in Promo Codes study surveyed 1,463 U.S. online shoppers on code usage, failure rates, and trust, and on most measures, men and women look almost identical. This piece breaks down where gender predicts a real difference in coupon code behavior, and where it doesn't.

Men are slightly more likely to have used a promo code in the past 60 days, but the gap is just 4 points, the thinnest cut in this entire piece. How shoppers go about finding promo codes in the first place looks nearly identical across genders too: the same rough split between habitual searchers, checkout-triggered searchers, passive recipients, and people who rarely bother, regardless of gender. If gender predicted anything about coupon behavior, this is where you'd expect it to show up first. Instead, usage and discovery method both land within a few points of each other.

The overall failure rate is close: 32% for men, 29% for women, a 3-point gap. The more interesting split shows up in what kind of failure each group runs into. Men are more likely to get a discount that's smaller than advertised (20% vs. 13%), the promo code works, just not for the full amount. Women are more likely to hit a total failure, where no discount applies at all (16% vs. 12%). The rate barely moves by gender; the type of failure does.

Men are more likely to buy anyway when a promo code fails: 41% versus 34%, a 7-point gap and the largest post-failure behavioral difference in the dataset. Abandonment barely moves: 24% of men and 25% of women walk away from the purchase entirely, essentially the same rate. Whatever drives someone to buy at full price rather than give up on a purchase differs by gender; whatever drives someone to abandon it altogether doesn't.

Men are more likely to believe retailers intentionally make promo codes harder to use: 53% versus 47%, a 6-point gap. The gap runs the other direction on the follow-up: women are more likely to have never considered the question at all (32% versus 23% for men). Fewer women have landed on a "no"; more of them simply haven't formed an opinion either way.
One thing that doesn't move: brand trust erosion after a failed promo code. About 26% of both men and women say the failure made them trust the retailer less. Men and women disagree about retailer intent, but the actual damage to trust lands in almost the same place for both.

This is the sharpest gender-only gap in the entire dataset: 61% of men have paid full price for something, then found a working promo code afterward, compared with 50% of women, 11 points. Retailer switching is close by comparison (56% versus 53%), which is worth noting on its own: men are considerably more likely to discover they overpaid, but not much more likely to act on it by taking their business elsewhere afterward.
The 11-point gap is already the largest single finding in this piece. It gets much larger once age enters the picture. The next section breaks that down.
Is coupon reliability getting better or worse, by gender?

Men are considerably more likely to say promo codes have gotten more reliable over the past year or two, 26% versus 15%, an 11-point gap, tied with the Reverse Checkout Gap as the largest gender difference in the piece. Women are slightly more likely to say things have gotten worse (15% versus 12%), more likely to say nothing's changed (60% versus 55%), and somewhat more likely to say they're not sure (10% versus 8%). Put together, men skew more optimistic across the board, while women cluster more toward "no change" or "no opinion."
This closes out the gender-only comparisons. The sharpest material in the whole piece is still ahead, what happens once age gets crossed with gender.

Every gap discussed so far in this piece is modest compared with what shows up once age and gender are crossed. Men 25-34 sit at the high end of three of these four cuts: the highest failure rate, the highest Reverse Checkout Gap rate, and the most retailer-switching of any cohort in the entire study. Men 35-44 take the lead on the fourth: the highest rate of believing retailers deliberately complicate promo codes. In every case, the opposite end of the spread belongs to shoppers 65 and older, mostly women 65+, except on failure rate, where the comparison point is men 65+.
The spreads run from 19 to 32 points, not quite double to nearly triple the size of the largest gap gender alone produces (the 11-point Reverse Checkout Gap gap from earlier in this piece). Gender shapes coupon behavior modestly on its own. Crossed with age, especially at the 25-34 mark, it produces the widest gaps anywhere in this dataset.
One transparency note: cell sizes at this level of cross-tabulation are smaller than the single-dimension cuts above. The 25-34 male cohort includes 140 respondents in the full sample, which is the base for the Reverse Checkout Gap figure above. The promo code failure-rate comparison in the same table runs on a smaller base: 84 respondents who tried a promo code in the past 60 days and answered the outcome question directly, still a sufficient base for reporting, but smaller than the topline gender or age numbers elsewhere in this piece.
Methodology
This piece draws its gender-cut figures from the same dataset behind Coupon Statistics 2026: The State of Shopper Trust in Promo Codes: a survey fielded April 27, 2026 on the Alchemer platform, using a general population panel of U.S. online shoppers. Of 3,638 total responses collected, 1,463 complete responses (after removing disqualified and partial completions) form the analysis basis.
Unlike the age-band cuts in the companion piece on this same dataset, gender comparisons here don't carry a sample-skew caveat: the achieved sample split nearly evenly between men and women (737 men, 726 women). The one caveat that does apply is noted where it matters: the age × gender intersection cuts run on smaller cell sizes than the single-dimension comparisons, as flagged in that section above.
One methodological note on the gender data specifically: the survey instrument asked respondents to identify as male or female and did not offer additional gender identity options. The comparisons in this piece describe patterns between those two reported categories; they don't speak to the experiences of respondents outside that binary.
