Most promo codes don't work as well as you'd hope. After testing codes across 500,000 online retailers over a rolling 90-day window, SimplyCodes found that the average code succeeds just 70% of the time. That means roughly 1 in 4 codes fail at checkout — wasting your time and eroding trust in the whole system.

But not every retailer is part of the problem. A small group of brands consistently maintain promo codes that actually work when you try them — with success rates well above the national average. These are the 20 retailers with the highest checkout reliability rates.

What separates high-reliability retailers from the rest

edikted promo codes

The common assumption is that fewer codes means better codes. The data doesn't support that. edikted maintains 749 active codes with a 99.8% success rate. Evry Jewels carries 523 codes at 94.2%. JomaShop stocks 92 codes at 88.0%. Large inventories can perform at the top decile — the differentiator isn't volume, it's active management.

What these retailers share is shorter code lifecycles and faster pruning. DTC and digitally native brands like edikted, Revice Denim, and TWO SVGE tend to remove expired codes quickly rather than letting them accumulate. The same pattern explains why AI tools (88.3%) and software (83.4%) lead the category rankings: these are newer merchant categories with shorter code histories, meaning less decay has accumulated in their inventories.

Retailers with lower reliability tend to follow the opposite pattern — large numbers of codes added over months or years, many of which were never removed after expiring. The result is a coupon page where most listed codes no longer work.

Why apparel is the most-searched and least-reliable category

Apparel category promo code reliability

Apparel is the largest category in the dataset with 330 merchants tested, and it sits near the bottom at a 65.5% success rate. That gap between demand and reliability is the widest of any category — more Americans search for fashion promo codes than any other type, and those codes are among the least likely to work.

The structural reasons are specific to how fashion retail operates. Rapid SKU turnover means codes tied to seasonal collections expire quickly. Influencer discount codes have short lifespans by design but stay indexed long after the partnership ends. And frequent promotional cadence — new sales every week — generates more dead inventory over time than categories with steadier discount cycles.

By contrast, categories like software and AI tools run fewer, longer-lived promotions, resulting in less accumulated code decay.

Which shopping categories have the most reliable promo codes?

When we broke out success rates across 13 shopping categories, the gap between the best and worst was over 25 percentage points.

Sports & Outdoors66.8%81
Apparel65.5%330

Newer categories like AI tools and software lead the pack, while categories with high promotional volume and rapid inventory turnover — apparel, automotive, home & garden — cluster near the bottom.

Tips for finding promo codes that work

  1. Look for recently verified codes. Codes tested within the last few days are far more likely to work than ones sitting untouched for weeks.
  2. Try direct-to-consumer brands first. DTC retailers tend to maintain cleaner coupon inventories with fewer dead codes.
  3. Check how many codes a retailer has available. A retailer with a handful of well-maintained codes often beats one listing hundreds of untested ones.
  4. Be skeptical of codes older than 30 days. Promo codes decay quickly — the older the code, the lower the odds it still works.

Methodology

SimplyCodes runs automated code verification across its network of over 500,000 brands, testing promo codes at checkout on a continuous basis. The success rates in this article reflect 90-day rolling test windows as of May 2026. Only retailers with meaningful consumer search traffic and at least 3 verified working codes were considered for this ranking. The national average success rate of 70% is calculated across over 500,000 retailers that met minimum testing thresholds.
