Free shipping can be the single biggest factor in whether people complete an online purchase. The most reliable ways to get free shipping are to apply a promo code at checkout, hit the store's free shipping minimum (usually $29–$50), or sign up for the retailer's free loyalty program.

In this guide, we'll walk through the most effective ways to get free shipping, which stores currently offer it (verified by our data), which popular retailers don't, and the best times of year to find free shipping deals.

Key Findings from Our Data

We verified promo codes across nearly 94,000 online retailers each month from January 2024 through March 2026. Here's what the data shows:

  • **Only 8.4% of online retailers **currently have a verified, working free shipping code
  • **Free shipping availability nearly doubled in the past year. **The number of retailers offering verified free shipping codes grew from about 3,800 in late 2024 to nearly 7,900 by early 2026.
  • **The best months to find free shipping are August through October and January through March. **December — despite being peak shopping season — is actually when retailers pull back on free shipping offers the most.
  • **73% of free shipping codes come with an additional discount. **The most common pairing is 11–20% off plus free shipping (28.6% of merchants). Only about 1 in 4 free shipping codes offer shipping savings alone.
  • **Retailers with free shipping codes carry twice as many working promo codes overall **(median of 3–4 verified codes vs. 2 for stores without free shipping) — so finding a free shipping store usually means finding more savings beyond just shipping.

How rare is free shipping for promo codes?

SimplyCodes tracks promo codes across nearly 500,000+ online retailers each month. As of March 2026, only 7,877 retailers have a free shipping promo code. The trend is moving in the right direction. The number of retailers offering free shipping codes has grown significantly over the past two years:

  • In January 2024, about 3,500 retailers had a verified free shipping code.
  • By August 2025, that number had nearly doubled to over 7,300 — the single biggest month-over-month jump in our data.
  • As of early 2026, it's held steady around 7,800 to 7,900 retailers per month.

The year-over-year growth tells the story even more clearly. Comparing the same months across years, free shipping availability grew by about 10–25% from 2024 to 2025. Then from 2025 to 2026, it accelerated — January 2026 saw 93% more retailers offering free shipping than January 2025, and February 2026 was up 104% year over year.

How to get free shipping on any order

There are lots of ways one can get free shipping on their order — and for some this can be a make or break on whether they actually make the purchase. According to the Baymard Institute, about 39% of online shoppers have abandoned a cart because of extra costs at checkout, with shipping fees being the primary culprit. Before you abandon you cart, try these tips to try to get free shipping on any order:

Use a free shipping code

The most direct route to free shipping is a promo code from the retailer site or from a coupon website/app/browser extention. Before placing any order, search for the retailer's name plus "free shipping code" and look for results from sources like the retailer itself, or from a trusted coupon website.

Meet the store's free shipping threshold

Most major retailers offer free shipping once your cart hits a certain dollar amount. These thresholds typically range from $25 to $75 depending on the store. Amazon's non-Prime threshold is $35, Target's is $35, and Walmart's is $35 for non-members. If you're a few dollars short, it can actually make more sense to add a small item you need — like socks or batteries — than to pay $8 or more in shipping fees.

Sign up for the retailer's email or SMS list

Many retailers offer a welcome discount or free shipping on your first order when you subscribe to their email list or text alerts. This is one of the most underused strategies because most people dismiss the signup popup. Even if the initial offer is a percentage-off code rather than free shipping specifically, it often stacks with a free shipping threshold to eliminate your delivery cost entirely.

Join the store's loyalty or rewards program

Free loyalty programs almost always come with shipping perks. Sephora's Beauty Insider offers free shipping on orders over a certain amount. Nike Members get free standard shipping on every order with no minimum. These programs are free to join and the shipping benefit alone makes them worth it, even if you never redeem a single rewards point.

Use a store credit card

Retail-branded credit cards frequently include automatic free shipping as a cardholder perk. For example, cardholders at stores like Nordstrom, Target, and Amazon (with the Prime Visa) often get free or upgraded shipping on every purchase. If you're a frequent shopper at a specific retailer, the free shipping benefit alone can offset any annual fee — though you should always weigh that against interest charges if you carry a balance.

Shop during major sales events

Retailers are most generous with free shipping during peak shopping periods. Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Amazon Prime Day are the obvious ones, but many stores also drop their shipping thresholds or offer sitewide free shipping during back-to-school season, Labor Day, and holiday lead-up weeks. Our data backs this up: November 2024 had the most free shipping merchants of any month that year, with 4,193 stores offering free shipping discount codes.

Choose buy online, pick up in store (BOPIS)

If the retailer has a physical location near you, buying online and picking up in store sidesteps shipping costs entirely. Most major retailers — Target, Walmart, Best Buy, Home Depot, Nordstrom — offer this option. Some even offer curbside pickup so you don't have to leave your car. It's technically not "free shipping," but the result is the same: you pay $0 for delivery.

Check for student, military, or first-responder discounts

A growing number of retailers offer permanent free shipping to verified students, active military, veterans, and first responders. Brands like Nike, Adidas, ASOS, and others provide these perks through verification services like SheerID or ID.me. If you qualify, it's worth taking five minutes to verify your status — the free shipping benefit typically applies to every order going forward, with no expiration.

Subscribe and save on items you buy regularly

For products you reorder on a regular basis — coffee, vitamins, pet food, cleaning supplies — subscription programs almost always include free shipping. Amazon's Subscribe & Save, Target's same-day delivery subscriptions, and individual brand subscription options (like from health and beauty companies) waive shipping fees and often give you an additional 5–15% discount on the item itself.

Add items to your cart and wait

This one takes patience, but it works. Add items to your cart, start the checkout process, and then leave the site without completing the purchase. Many retailers will send you a cart abandonment email within 24 to 48 hours offering free shipping or a discount to complete your order. This doesn't work with every store, and it's most effective with mid-size and large retailers that use automated email marketing — but when it works, it's free money.

Which retailers offer free shipping?

One of the most common questions people type into Google is whether a specific store offers free shipping. We checked each of these high-demand retailers against our verification database and their current shipping policies. Here's what we found.

SHEIN

SHEIN offers free standard shipping on orders over $29, though this threshold can vary by seller since items may ship from different warehouses. Standard delivery typically takes about 8 business days. New customers can also get shipping perks by signing up for a SHEIN account, which sometimes comes with welcome coupons. If you're a regular SHEIN shopper, building your cart to $29 is the most reliable way to avoid shipping fees.

Home Depot

Home Depot offers free shipping on most orders over $45 for standard items, though oversized and heavy items (appliances, lumber, etc.) follow different shipping rules. For anything you can pick up locally, Home Depot's free in-store and curbside pickup are your best bet to avoid shipping costs entirely.

Fashion Nova

Fashion Nova consistently has free shipping codes on SimplyCodes making it one of the more reliable stores for shipping deals. Fashion Nova also tends to offer free shipping promotions during sales events and their newsletter.

Nike

Nike Members get free standard shipping on orders of $50 or more — and Nike membership is completely free to join. Non-members need to hit a $75 minimum. Signing up for a Nike account also unlocks member-exclusive sales, early access to product drops, and a birthday discount. For students, Nike offers 10% off through SheerID verification, which can help offset shipping costs on smaller orders.

Amazon

Amazon's free shipping for non-Prime members requires a $35 minimum on eligible items (books still qualify at $25). Standard delivery for non-Prime takes 5 to 8 business days. Amazon Prime ($14.99/month or $139/year) removes all shipping minimums and includes free two-day delivery on millions of items. If you shop on Amazon frequently, the math usually works in Prime's favor — Amazon says the average Prime member saved over $500 on deliveries in the past year.

Target

Target offers free standard shipping on orders over $35. Target Circle members (free to join) get the same $35 threshold. For unlimited free same-day delivery, Target offers Circle 360 ($49/year for annual Target Circle cardholders, $99/year otherwise). In-store pickup and Drive Up are always free regardless of order size — and Drive Up is one of the fastest options among major retailers.

Walmart

Walmart offers free shipping on orders over $35 for non-members. Walmart+ members ($12.95/month or $98/year) get free shipping with no minimum, including free next-day and two-day delivery on eligible items. Walmart also offers free in-store pickup and curbside pickup on most online orders with no minimum purchase.

Dick's Sporting Goods

Dick's Sporting Goods offers free standard shipping on orders of $49 or more. ScoreRewards members (free to join) earn points on purchases but the shipping threshold remains the same. In-store and curbside pickup are free alternatives.

Old Navy

Old Navy typically offers free shipping on orders over $50, though they frequently run promotions that temporarily lower or eliminate the threshold — especially during holiday periods and back-to-school. Signing up for Old Navy's email list can surface limited-time free shipping offers. Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic, and Athleta share a rewards program, so purchases across all four brands count toward rewards.

Gap

Gap currently has a verified free shipping code on SimplyCodes with up to 30% off plus free shipping across 8 verified codes. Gap is one of the more consistent free-shipping-code retailers in our data.

Dillard's

Dillard's offers free standard shipping on orders of $150 or more — one of the higher thresholds among major department stores. For orders under $150, shipping starts at around $8.50. There's no loyalty program workaround for the threshold, so your best option is to consolidate purchases into a single larger order.

Neiman Marcus

Neiman Marcus has a verified free shipping code on SimplyCodes right now, with 20% off plus free shipping. Neiman Marcus also offers free standard shipping on all orders with no minimum purchase as part of their standard policy, which makes them one of the most shipping-friendly luxury retailers.

Etsy

Because Etsy is a marketplace of independent sellers, each shop sets its own shipping policy. Some sellers offer free shipping on all orders, others set a threshold, and many charge shipping on everything. There's no sitewide free shipping code for Etsy. Your best bet is to filter search results by "Free shipping" on Etsy's site, or look for sellers who include shipping in their item prices.

Nordstrom Rack

Nordstrom Rack offers free shipping on orders of $89 or more. It's worth noting that the parent company, Nordstrom, offers free shipping on all orders with no minimum — one of the few major retailers to do so. If the item you're looking at is available on both Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack, checking the full-price site might actually save you money after shipping costs.

Marshalls

Marshalls has a verified free shipping code on SimplyCodes. Outside of promo codes, Marshalls' standard free shipping threshold is $89 for online orders.

Temu

Temu frequently offers free shipping on orders with a relatively low threshold, and the platform often runs sitewide free shipping promotions. However, delivery times from Temu are typically longer than domestic retailers (often 7 to 15 business days), and recent changes to U.S. customs rules around the de minimis exemption may affect pricing and duties on Temu orders going forward.

JCPenney

JCPenney offers free shipping on orders over $75, or free ship-to-store with no minimum. If there's a JCPenney location near you, ship-to-store is one of the easiest ways to avoid their shipping fee entirely.

When is the best time to find free shipping?

Free shipping isn't equally available year-round. Our data shows clear seasonal patterns in how many retailers offer verified free shipping codes — and some of the peaks and valleys are counterintuitive.

Late summer is the real free shipping season

Most people would guess that Black Friday or the December holidays are when free shipping peaks. That's not what our data shows. The single largest jump in free shipping availability happened in August 2025, when the number of retailers with free shipping codes nearly doubled — going from about 4,800 in July to over 7,300 in August. That's a 93.7% year-over-year increase compared to August 2024.

This makes sense when you think about it. Back-to-school spending is the second-largest shopping event of the year, and retailers use free shipping as an incentive to capture early purchases before students head to campus. The August surge wasn't a one-month spike, either — it held through September and October at roughly the same level.

November brings a bump, but December drops off

November is strong for free shipping, but not as strong as you might expect. In 2024, November had the highest free shipping count of the year at 4,193 retailers. In 2025, November actually came in below August through October, with 6,218 retailers — still a solid number, but a noticeable step down from the 7,300 range in the months before.

December is where things get surprising. Free shipping availability dropped in December both years: from 4,193 in November 2024 to 4,054 in December 2024, and from 6,218 in November 2025 to 5,062 in December 2025. The reason is straightforward — retailers know consumers are going to buy holiday gifts regardless of shipping incentives, so they pull back on free shipping promotions during the period when purchase intent is already at its highest.

January is underrated

The data suggests that early in the year is one of the best times to find free shipping. January through March 2026 saw free shipping availability climb to 7,700–7,900 retailers, the highest sustained levels in our entire dataset. Retailers use free shipping aggressively in Q1 to bring back holiday shoppers and fight the post-holiday spending drop-off. If you're not in a rush to buy something, waiting until January can get you a better shipping deal than shopping in December.

The month-by-month pattern

Based on two full years of verified data, here's the general free shipping availability rhythm:

PeriodFree Shipping AvailabilityWhat's Happening
January–MarchHigh (7,700–7,900 retailers in 2026)Post-holiday recovery; retailers compete for attention
April–JulyModerate (4,400–4,900 retailers in 2025)Steady baseline; gradual buildup
August–OctoberPeak (7,200–7,300 retailers in 2025)Back-to-school surge; pre-holiday ramp
NovemberHigh but declining (6,200 in 2025)Black Friday boost, but pulling back from peak
DecemberDip (5,000 in 2025)Retailers pull back; shoppers buy regardless

The takeaway: if you're planning a big purchase and shipping cost matters, August through October and January through March are your best windows. December — despite being peak shopping season — is actually one of the worst months to hunt for free shipping deals.

The bottom line

If you shop at a store regularly, joining their free loyalty program almost always unlocks lower thresholds or free shipping outright. And if you have flexibility on timing, shopping in late summer or early in the new year gives you the best odds of finding free shipping deals.

The stores where we verified working free shipping codes right now — including Fashion Nova, Gap, ULTA, Duluth Trading, Neiman Marcus, Fanatics, Dermstore, Marshalls, and dozens more — are a good place to start. But availability changes monthly.

Methodology

The data in this article comes from SimplyCodes' promo code verification system. Here's how it works and why it matters.

SimplyCodes tracks promo codes across approximately 500,000+ online retailers each month. Codes are verified through a combination of automated checkout testing and community-based verification, where real users test codes and report results. Each code is assigned a health score based on these test results. Only codes that pass verification and maintain a healthy score are classified as "green" — meaning they've been confirmed to work at checkout.

For this article, a retailer was counted as "offering free shipping" only if it had at least one green-status free shipping promo code during the measurement period. Codes that were expired, unverified, single-use, or flagged as sticky (auto-applied and not user-actionable) were excluded. Only actual promo codes were counted — deals, sales, and non-code promotions were not included.

The monthly trend data spans January 2024 through March 2026 and is drawn from our dataset, which aggregates verified code inventory at the merchant level on a monthly basis. The current-snapshot data (store lists, category breakdowns) reflects March 2026. The keyword and search demand data comes from Google Search Console for the SimplyCodes website over the most recent 90-day period.

All data is subject to a natural lag — codes are verified on a rolling basis, and a small number of codes may expire between verification and publication. The figures in this article represent the state of verified free shipping as accurately as our system can measure it, but individual code availability may change by the time you read this. For the most current codes, visit SimplyCodes directly.
