Not every online retailer has a working promo code waiting for you at checkout — but when they do, don't expect many. SimplyCodes tested promo codes at checkout across more than 120,000 online retailers and found that more than half have 2 or fewer working coupon codes. For the typical retailer, the coupon page isn't a buffet — it's a coin flip between one or two codes that might save you money.

Then there are the outliers. A small group of retailers — less than 2% of the dataset — maintains more than 100 verified codes at a time. At the very top, a fast-fashion brand called Edikted carries 749 verified working promo codes, each one individually tested and confirmed to apply a discount at checkout.

The gap between those two realities is what this study is about. We ranked the top 30 retailers by verified code inventory, broke down which shopping categories carry the most working codes, and examined whether all that volume actually translates to better discounts for shoppers.

Here's what the data shows:

  • More than half of retailers with verified codes have 2 or fewer. The median is 2. If a retailer has more than 5, it's already in the top quarter of all merchants.
  • The top 30 retailers carry between 39 and 749 verified working codes — up to 375x the national median.
  • Half the leaderboard is apparel. 15 of the top 30 verified-code leaders are fashion and clothing retailers, followed by beauty and health.
  • Some retailers maintain hundreds of verified codes with near-perfect test rates. Edikted holds a 99.8% code test success rate across its inventory. MagBak, Heart & Soil, and Bink all clear 99%.
  • More verified codes doesn't always mean bigger discounts. Some of the highest-volume retailers top out at 10% off, while smaller-inventory merchants regularly clear 40–50%.

How many promo codes does the average retailer have?

To understand what makes the top of the leaderboard so unusual, you first need to understand what's normal — and how rare "normal" really is.

The SimplyCodes database tracks more than 530,000 online retailers. Of those, about 59% don't have a single promo code listed. Another 28% have codes on their pages, but none that pass verification when tested at checkout. That leaves just 23% of all retailers — roughly 1 in 4 — with at least one verified working promo code.

Among those 123,673 retailers that do have verified codes, the inventory is thin. The median is 2 verified codes, and more than half carry 2 or fewer.

Here's how the full distribution breaks down:

More than three-quarters of all retailers with working codes carry 5 or fewer. The distribution is heavily right-skewed: a small number of merchants carry enormous inventories while the vast majority operate with a handful of codes or less.

The pattern varies by category. Health, beauty, and electronics retailers tend to carry slightly more verified codes than average, with medians of 3 in each category. Every other major category — including apparel, home and garden, food, sports, and travel — sits at a median of 2. The differences are modest at the median, but the top end of each category tells a more varied story, which we'll explore in a later section.

The top 30 retailers with the most working coupon codes

Below is the full ranking of the 30 retailers with the largest verified coupon inventories. Every code counted here was individually tested at checkout and confirmed to apply a valid discount. We also included each retailer's 90-day code test success rate — the percentage of all codes tested in the past three months that passed verification — as a quality signal alongside the raw count.

What stands out

The top two retailers — Edikted and Evry Jewels — are in a tier of their own. Both are DTC fashion brands, and both carry more verified codes than the next three merchants combined. After that, the list settles into a range of roughly 39 to 150 verified codes, with a sharp concentration of apparel and beauty brands.

Exactly half the list — 15 of 30 — comes from apparel. Beauty takes 6 spots, health takes 4, home and garden takes 3, and electronics rounds it out with 2.

The success rate column reveals that volume and quality don't always go together. Heart & Soil, Bink, and MagBak all maintain success rates above 99% — meaning virtually every code they release passes verification. On the other end, Bohme (42.1%) and Medik8 (42.9%) carry sizable verified inventories despite lower overall test pass rates, suggesting they release codes at a pace that outstrips verification.

Which shopping categories have the most promo codes?

The top 30 is dominated by apparel and beauty brands — but does that pattern hold across the broader market? To find out, we looked at verified code inventories across every major shopping category using the full 120,000+ retailer dataset.

At the median, most categories look similar — nearly every major category sits at a median of 2 verified codes. But three categories edge ahead with a median of 3: health, beauty, and electronics. The separation is modest at the center of the distribution, but the top end of each category varies significantly.

Apparel leads in raw volume — 1,348 merchants with 50+ verified codes — but that's partly a function of having more than twice as many retailers as any other category. As a share of category, health (5.3%) and beauty (5.4%) are more likely to have a given retailer clear the 50-code threshold than apparel (4.3%).

Category Leaders

To put faces to the numbers, here are the retailers leading each major category by verified code count:

Apparel: Edikted (749), Evry Jewels (523), Bombas (149). The top two are in a class of their own — no other apparel merchant comes close to triple digits outside Bombas.

Beauty: Alt Fragrances (135), BK Beauty (93), DRMTLGY (63). Beauty's top tier is more evenly distributed than apparel's, with three merchants above 60.

Health: Ameano Peptides (635), Lensmart Online (146), HumeHealth (122). Ameano Peptides is a standout — its 635 verified codes rival the top of the overall leaderboard.

Electronics: Casely (141), MagBak (138), MOFT (73). Phone case and accessory brands lead the category, both with success rates above 99%.

Home & Garden: Geometry (53), Hydro Jug (51), Grove Collaborative (49). The most compressed top three of any category — all clustered within four codes of each other.

Food & Restaurants: JOI (56), Royo Bread (52), Everyday Dose (46). A category where verified code inventories top out earlier, reflecting shorter-lived promotions tied to perishable inventory.

Sports & Outdoors: Tatami Fightwear (50), Tennis Express (47), Eberlestock (30). Niche sport brands dominate, with the overall category carrying one of the lower 90th percentile ceilings.

Pets: Spark Paws (72), Uproot Clean (51), Omlet (37). A smaller category that punches above its weight — its 90th percentile of 18 outperforms food, hobbies, and entertainment despite having fewer merchants.

Do more coupon codes mean better discounts?

For shoppers, the most important question about this data isn't which retailer has the most codes — it's whether those codes are actually worth using. We cross-referenced each retailer's verified code count with the best percentage-off discount available on their page to find out whether volume translates to value.

Across the broader market, the answer is: generally, yes. Retailers with larger verified inventories tend to offer steeper discounts. Merchants with just 1 to 2 verified codes have a median best discount of 10% off. At 6 to 25 verified codes, that climbs to 20%. Among retailers with more than 100 verified codes, the median best discount reaches 40%.

Verified Code TierRetailersMedian Best Discount
1–2 codes34,84210% off
3–5 codes20,69515% off
6–10 codes10,10020% off
11–25 codes7,14820% off
26–50 codes3,12120% off
51–100 codes2,00130% off
100+ codes2,08140% off

But that broad correlation breaks down at the individual level — especially at the top of the leaderboard. Among the top 30 retailers by verified code count, the best available discount ranges from as low as 10% to as high as 70%, with little relationship to how many codes a retailer carries.

Edikted, which leads the entire dataset with 749 verified codes, offers a best discount of just 10% off. Darc Sport (100 codes), DFYNE (72 codes), Goodr (50 codes), and Beauty House (44 codes) are all capped at the same 10%. These retailers have built massive verified inventories around relatively modest discounts — lots of codes, but mostly small ones.

On the other end, some mid-inventory merchants offer significantly deeper savings. L'ange Hair (41 verified codes) tops out at 70% off. Mixtiles (42 codes) reaches 63%. HumeHealth (122 codes) offers up to 55%, and CAKES Body and Elevate both hit 50%.

The takeaway for shoppers is straightforward: a retailer with hundreds of verified codes is a good sign that something will work at checkout, but the size of the inventory doesn't tell you how big the discount will be. A merchant with 40 verified codes and a 70% best discount may save you more money than one with 700 codes and a 10% ceiling.

Methodology

This study is based on SimplyCodes' proprietary coupon verification system, which continuously tests promo codes at live retailer checkouts.

How codes are verified. Each promo code in the SimplyCodes database is tested directly at a retailer's checkout to determine whether it successfully applies a discount. Codes that pass this test — receiving a health score of 50 or above — are classified as verified working codes. This study counts only verified codes. Codes that have not been tested, or that failed testing, are not included in any figures reported here.

Retailer universe. The SimplyCodes database contains more than 530,000 merchant records. Of those, 123,673 had at least one verified working promo code at the time of analysis. These 123,673 retailers form the basis for all distribution statistics, category comparisons, and discount analysis in this study.

Top 30 ranking criteria. Retailers were ranked by total verified code count. To ensure the ranking reflects merchants with meaningful consumer demand, we applied a minimum threshold of 200 weekly search clicks (sourced from Google Search Console data for SimplyCodes store pages). This filter removed merchants with large code inventories but negligible consumer traffic.

Category data. Category classifications are assigned by SimplyCodes' merchant taxonomy, which organizes retailers into a hierarchy of top-level categories (e.g., Apparel, Beauty, Health) and subcategories. Category-level statistics use the full 123,673-merchant dataset without a traffic filter. Category leader rankings use a lower traffic threshold of 100 weekly clicks to provide broader representation.

Discount data. Best available discount figures represent the highest percentage-off discount available for each merchant in the most recent complete month of data. Merchants whose best discount was expressed as a dollar amount rather than a percentage were excluded from the discount analysis to maintain unit consistency. Outlier values above 100% were also excluded.

Code test success rate. The 90-day success rate shown alongside the top 30 ranking represents the percentage of all code tests conducted for that merchant in the prior 90 days that resulted in a passing score. This is a broader quality metric than the verified code count — it reflects how often any code tested at that merchant's checkout works, not just the count of currently verified codes.

Snapshot timing. All figures in this study reflect a point-in-time snapshot. Verified code counts, discount values, and success rates change daily as codes are added, expire, or are retested. The data was pulled in March 2026.
