The most frustrating coupon failure isn't the dead code — it's the live one that won't touch your cart. Nine times out of ten the culprit is an exclusion: a scope rule that limits which products, categories, or brands the discount applies to.
Exclusions are the single most common restriction family in the SimplyCodes data, and the counts below recompute daily. The dominant form is inclusion-scoping — “applies to these products only” — while explicit exclude-lists are rarer but stricter. When a working code won't apply, check the cart before you blame the code.
Exclusions are scope rules: the code works, just not on what’s in your cart. As of August 7, 2026, 1,393,361 tracked codes carry a product, category, or brand scope rule — by far the most common reason a valid code still won’t apply at checkout.
- “Specific products only” is the biggest family: 1,026,019 codes apply to certain items rather than the whole store.
- Explicit exclude-lists are smaller but sharper — 214,046 codes name products that never qualify, 18,295 exclude whole departments.
- If a working code won’t apply, the cart — not the code — is usually the reason.
Codes = distinct promotions carrying that scope rule · one code can carry several, so the rows add up to more than the headline · rules observed from real code behavior and terms.

Methodology
How SimplyCodes verifies codes. Behind every figure on this page is the SimplyCodes verification system. Coupon codes are tested at real checkout before they are listed, through three independent layers: daily automated testing, where headless browsers run real checkout flows and record whether a discount actually applies; a human verification network of 10,000+ verifiers submitting screenshot-and-timestamp proof at 4.6M+ verification actions a month and 98% accuracy; and a real-time fleet signal, where live checkout outcomes from millions of SimplyCodes users feed back into the engine. Each code carries a Health Score from 0–100, weighted by checkout outcomes, verifier consensus, and recency. With an estimated 40–60% of coupon codes on the public web dead, restricted, or fake, the system exists so a code earns its place by working at checkout, not by being collected.
How this study is built. We count the distinct promo codes carrying each kind of scope rule — product, category, and brand inclusion or exclusion — as observed from the code’s real behavior and terms, each with evidence references. The headline counts each code once however many scope rules it carries, so it is smaller than the rows added together. Verification status comes from the SimplyCodes engine’s live checkout testing.
